How to create and manage markups

Drop pins, draw lines and areas, upload survey coordinates, and organize field documentation.

Markups are geolocated annotations that let you document site conditions, issues, and progress directly on the map. This article explains the different markup types and how to use them for field documentation.

What are the markup types?

The Markups tab offers five tools:

Save Point drops a pin at a specific location on the map. You can upload a photo, add a comment, and assign the pin to a folder. This is the most recommended markup type for field documentation, especially on mobile.

Save Line draws a line annotation on the map to mark linear features or boundaries.

Save Area draws a polygon area annotation on the map.

Pin Coordinates lets you enter specific Northing and Easting values manually to create a point (pin) at exact coordinates on the map.

Upload Shots imports CSV or GeoJSON files containing survey coordinates as interactive pins on the map. (See the separate article: "How to upload staking coordinates to the site map.")

Save Point workflow for field documentation

The Save Point workflow is particularly valuable for on-site documentation using a mobile device:

1. Open TraceAir on your phone or tablet (office.traceair.net).
2. Navigate to your site and activate the overlay you want to reference.
3. Click Markup → Save Point.
4. Drop the pin at your location on the map.
5. Upload a photo from your device (taken on-site).
6. Add a comment describing the issue or observation.
7. Select a folder for organization.
8. Create the markup.

Tip: For adding multiple photos during punch lists, use Save Point to upload images to specific locations. The images are stored on the pin and viewable by clicking it. This is more organized than using the Draw tool's image upload, which places images as overlays on the map.

Markup status and colors

Markups can be color-coded to indicate status. For example, change a markup's color to green when an issue is resolved. This provides a visual status system directly on the map. The color change is the status indicator — there are no custom status labels, but you can add notes to any markup item.

Markup folders

All markups are stored in folders within the Markups tab. There is a default "General" folder, and you can create unlimited additional folders. Markups are organized alphabetically within each folder. Use the search function to locate specific markups in large collections.

Frequently asked questions

Can markups be exported as a report?

Markups can be captured using the Snip Screen tool, which downloads a high-quality PNG of the current map view including visible markups. There is no dedicated markup export report.

Can other users see my markups?

Yes. Markups are visible to all users with access to the project. There are no private markups.

Can I upload multiple photos to a single markup pin?

No. Save Point lets you upload a single photo to a pin.
